by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Low GI diet bears fruit in classroom

JIM O’ROURKE
January 29, 2012
The Sun-Herald

AMIR ZANDI admits he was a typical teenager when it came to his diet – regular trips to fast-food restaurants and lots of soft drinks.

But when the 17-year-old HSC student from Gordon became so fatigued he could barely drag himself out of bed, was losing concentration in the classroom and sleeping up to 15 hours a night, he knew something was wrong.

Amir was diagnosed with insulin resistance – which reduces uptake of energy-producing glucose in the body – and put on a low GI (glycemic index) diet. The GI is a measure of the effect of sugars and starches on blood glucose levels. He now has a low GI/high carbohydrate breakfast, eating either wholegrain cereals, multigrain breads, natural muesli, baked beans, poached eggs, fruit and plain or diet yoghurt.

Now an increasing body of research linking low GI and academic performance is prompting doctors to urge parents to consider changing their children’s diets.

Alan Barclay, chief scientific officer at the Glycemic Index Foundation, a partnership between the University of Sydney and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, said parents wanting to improve their childrens’ school performance should give them a breakfast with about 35 to 40 grams of carbohydrate with a low GI.

”That should translate into improved performance in various tasks at school which ultimately should lead to better marks at the end of the year,” Dr Barclay said.

”Glucose is the primary fuel for our brain. If we don’t have enough in the right amounts over the right period of time we basically can’t think properly and can’t remember things.”

Research by British academics published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2010 found a low GI/high carbohydrate breakfast improved the cognition and attentiveness of children and helped them complete maths tasks more quickly and accurately.

Amir said his his concentration levels had massively improved and he no longer felt tired during the day. He also lost about 15 kilograms in seven months.
”My parents thought I was just being a lazy teenager, but I was just so, so tired,” he said. ”It was a bit scary actually, not knowing what was wrong with me.”

Preparing for your first lesson: humanities subjects.

R. Lawrence

The first lesson of tutoring in the humanities subjects (English, History, and other subjects involving essay writing) is usually focused on figuring out what you want and need to improve. The main advantage of tutoring is the one-on-one attention you get, which means your tutor can adapt how they teach to your strengths and weaknesses, and the way you learn. To make this process faster and get the best value for your money, we recommend doing the following in preparation for your first lesson:

1: Bring examples of your work.
The more examples you can give, the faster and easier it is going to be for your tutor to make an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. This might mean past essays, pieces of creative writing, comprehension or sources questions, and even the notes you have made in class. It is best to have both handwritten and typed examples of your work. Past exams are particularly useful.

2: Bring any relevant assessment notifications or other tasks that you have outstanding.
This one’s pretty self-evident. If you want to work on it, bring all of the information you have on it. Otherwise you’re working from memory, and your tutor’s guessing what you’re meant to be doing.

3: Have a think about what you want to improve.
Good tutoring should encourage you to reflect on your own skills and learning process, but you’re ultimately responsible for starting the process! Have a think: what comments from teachers do you usually get on your work? Does the same thing get mentioned over and over – perhaps your expression, or structure, or a lack of evidence and techniques, or not answering the question? How are your exam skills – do you get stressed, run out of time, or find it hard to write clearly under time pressure? Tutors can help fix these kinds of problems, but they will need to have an honest and frank discussion with you to quickly figure out what you need.

4: Have a think about what you’re good at.
What kinds of things are you good at? Why are you good at them? How does your brain work? Do you like solving clearly defined problems with a methodical approach, or do you prefer to be able to work flexibly and creatively? If you can tell your tutor what you’re confident with, it helps both of you: a tutor who knows your strengths can enhance them, and show you how to use them more effectively.

Why HSC Tutoring Seminars Work – Peaceful Place System

Improve Exam Results with Proven Techniques for the HSC

Walter Sprinkle is available for interview during school holidays January 11th – 28th.

Sydney, June 2011: Students across the country are already preparing for end-of-year exams with school holidays no exception. Former high school teacher and tutor, Walter Sprinkle, gives students the winning exam edge through a technique known as the Peaceful Place System. Based on veteran Australian trainer, Sandy MacGregor’s, popular mind focusing technique, the Peaceful Place System helps students release stress and feel in control during challenging exams. Some of his students have improved results by up to 60%.

Most students feel overwhelmed by exams with many spending hours sitting in their room bouncing a ball against the wall rather than working. The Peaceful Place System has helped many students learn how to focus and improve their results.

“It’s given my students the ability to change their thinking and develop effective study habits,” begins Walter Sprinkle. “Using their Peaceful Place helps them relax and release stress and this in turn helps them to clear their minds. They can then write better essays, solve science and maths questions and complete their exams in the time allocated. This motivates my students to face every new question and exam more confidently and without fear.”

The system shows students how to create their peaceful place in 15 minutes each day. Once the technique is honed, they can access calm in 30 seconds. Rather than becoming overwhelmed during exams, students know how to clear their minds and focus on the task at hand.

Based on brain science, the system allows students to quickly and easily find calm. It also uses visualisation (used by Olympic athletes) to help students set and achieve their goals. Walter can share results enjoyed by his students. Visit www.yourpeacefulplace.com.au

About Walter Sprinkle
For 20 years, Walter Sprinkle taught high school English and History in Armidale, Wee Waa, Tamworth and Sydney including Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets. For the past 8 years, he’s run a successful tutoring program, Smart Moves Coaching Australia ®.
